Focus On Family: The Genetic Link To Sudden Cardiac Death

The sudden cardiac death of a loved one can be a tremendously difficult and traumatic experience for a family. Relatives are often dealing with the shock of a typically unexpected death while also wondering if other family members may also be at risk for a heart problem.

While not all sudden cardiac events are related to a hereditary condition, a genetic heart condition may be the underlying reason for the sudden event in some individuals. In certain situations, cardiac organizations including the American Heart Association and Heart Rhythm Society support family and genetic evaluations after a sudden cardiac death in a relative. Join Genome Medical’s licensed and certified genetic counselor Ashley Parrott to explore possible genetic causes of sudden cardiac death and evaluations that are available to help families find answers.
